six men were sentenced to death and eleven other to life imprisonment for the murder of JCD leader Shafiqul Islam Shafiq. The speedy trial tribunal handed down the death penalty to Abul Bashar alias Badsha and Akter Hossain. Mohammad Ali, Zahidul Haq, Tipu and Shahin were tried in absentia and also sentenced to death. According to the prosecution, Shafiqul Islam Shafiq, JCD leader of the Rupganj district, had a meeting with party leaders and activists at Bolta on November 8, 2005. After the meeting, gunmen opened fire on him as he was getting into a car. He died on the spot.
