BANGLADESH: TWO SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING IN FENI

a court in Feni, Bangladesh, sentenced two people to death and another to three years rigorous imprisonment for killing a young woman after raping her in 1998. The condemned convicts were identified as Mahbubul Haq Bali of Char Krisnajoy village and Nurul Alam of Mirganj village in Sonagazi upazila, while the other convict as Ahsanullah of Mirganj village. All were tried in absentia. According to the prosecution, Mahbub and his friends Nurul Alam and Ahsanullah strangled a young woman to death after violating her on July 12, 1998. They buried her at Kata Ghona village on July 16. Police exhumed the body of the woman after 12 days but her identity could not be determined. After examining records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Begum Mahmuda Khantun pronounced the judgment.
