Bangladesh: two years on, fugitive death-row convict arrested in Chattogram

A death-row convict who escaped from Kashimpur Central High Security Prison more than two years ago has been arrested in Chattogram city.

Mohammad Bahadur Mia, 35, was arrested in the Akbar Shah area of the port city on September 18, 2026, the Special Response Battalion (SRB)-7 said in a media statement on September 19 afternoon.

Bahadur fled Kashimpur Central High Security Prison in Gazipur on Aug 6, 2024, the agency said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police RM Mozaffar Hossain, assistant director for media at SRB-7, said the agency learnt that the fugitive convict was hiding in the Akbar Shah Police Station area.

“An operation was conducted there on September 18 afternoon. He was arrested from the Foy's Lake area,” he said.

Bahadur is the son of Siraj Mia of Kanchan Nagar village in Chattogram's Chandanaish Upazila.

Following his arrest, Bahadur was handed over to Konabari Police Station in Gazipur for further legal proceedings, the SRB said.

The agency did not provide further details about the case for which Bahadur was sentenced to death or how he had remained at large since escaping from prison.
