BARBADOS DEATH PENALTY CASE GOES TO HUMAN RIGHTS COURT

the Inter-American Court on Human Rights will hear a death penalty case from Barbados when it re-convenes in Costa Rica in 2009. The announcement came in a press statement from human rights lawyers representing Tyrone DaCosta Cadogan, convicted of murder. They are contending that the mandatory death sentence imposed by the Supreme Court of Barbados is in violation of their client's fundamental rights. The lawyers are also challenging Barbados' decision to maintain the mandatory death sentence, following a ruling issued in 2007 by the Inter-American Court on Human Rights. The Barbados Government is yet to respond to the latest charges by the human rights lawyers.
