Belgium's refusal to extradite Fehriye Erdal [charged with murdering a Turkish businessman] to Turkey rekindled the debate over the death penalty. MHP [Nationalist Action Party] deputy leader Sevket Bulent Yahnici said that they were willing to re-examine this subject, on which Ecevit was insistent, but they would oppose the lifting of death penalty for crimes against the state. He said: "If Turkey is going to debate the capital punishment that debate should not disregard the people's sensitivities regarding the PKK and Hezbollah."
