Bian Zhong, a Beijing accountant, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in the city's largest corruption case in recent years.
Bian, a 41-year-old employee with the National Natural Science Foundation of China, was convicted of embezzling more than 200 million yuan (24 million dollars).
The conviction was handed down at the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court at the end of what has been described as the largest graft case handled by city prosecutors in several years. In China, a death sentence with a two-year reprieve is routinely commuted to life imprisonment.
One of Bian's supervisors, Wu Feng, was sentenced to eight years in jail for misuse of public funds and dereliction of duty.
