Huang Yaquan and Huang Shengyu, two prisoners wrongly convicted of robbery in March 1994 and given suspended death sentences were released and given compensation by a court in southern China's Hainan province.
The convictions of the two men were overturned after police identified two other "culprits" for the 1993 robbery in August, Xinhua news agency reported.
The two innocently convicted men were released on September 1 and later that month sued the state for up to 318,000 yuan (38,400 dollars) in compensation for the time they were wrongly jailed.
However, the Hainan Supreme Court ruled that Yaquan should be paid only 157,000 yuan in compensation for the 3,181 days he spent in prison, while Shengyu was paid 159,000 yuan for his 3,217 days in jail, it said.
Suspended death sentences in China are normally commuted to life imprisonment. Their sentences were also upheld upon appeal in November 1994.
