Bishop Ted Bacani [as quoted in the Manila Standard] commented about the apparent inconsistency of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines on the death penalty:
"...I am surprised that the CBCP has not expressed any specific objection to an objectionable aspect of the plunder law whose constitutionality is now being questioned. I am referring to the death penalty, which can be imposed on a person convicted of plunder. If the CBCP is against the imposition of the death penalty, then it must oppose the death penalty as a punishment for plunder. Its silence on the matter might be construed as a political omission and as practical negation on its blanket stand against the imposition of the death penalty in our country today."
