Bredesen extends stay of execution for Workman Gov

Bredesen extends stay of execution for Workman Gov. Phil Bredesen said he is extending the execution reprieve of convicted cop killer Philip Workman for 3 months. The reprieve, which Bredesen granted in September, was to expire Thursday. Bredesen said he was extending it to allow a federal grand jury to complete its investigation into an attack involving Shelby County Medical Examiner Dr. O.C. Smith. Workman has said that Smith's testimony in his original trial was "totally inaccurate." He has also accused Smith of withholding an X-ray that indicated that officer Oliver might have been killed by gunfire from another officer. (see also 04-04-2001 and 09-15-2003)
