Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov said he planned to visit Libya to discuss the case of five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death over the infection of hundreds of Libyan children with HIV.
"The sense of such a visit to Tripoli is to revive the dialogue between the two countries," Parvanov said in an interview. A Libyan court in May 2004 sentenced the nurses and a Palestinian doctor to death by firing squad after convicting them of deliberately infecting 426 Libyan children with the virus that causes AIDS. The medics, who had been imprisoned since 1999, said they were forced to confess under torture.
