Bulgarian Assembly chairman Ognyan Gerdzhikov, who was leading a delegation to Rome met with Senate President of Marcello Pera, aksed Italy for assistance regarding the Bulgarian medical professionals, sentenced to death by the Benghazi Criminal Court on 6 May on charges of deliberately infecting Libyan children with HIV. "Realizing the importance of the problem for our country, the Italian government has taken the necessary steps. My plea was not to ease down the pressure because this is the only way of influencing Libya," Gerdzhikov said. Pera assured Gerdzhikov that the diplomatic efforts to save the medics would go on. Mr Pera pointed out that Libya is striving to warm up its relations with the European Union and Italy, and that Italy would use this fact in putting on pressure in connection with the sentence of the Bulgarian medics," Gerdzhikov stated after his meeting with Pera.
