Caribbean Justice, a group working for the abolition of the death penalty, said it was deeply concerned over allegations of brutality and mistreatment of a Trinidadian death row inmate and called on the authorities to launch an investigation into the matter. The prisoner, Damian Ramiah, was allegedly taken from his cell on July 30 and subjected to vicious and sustained beatings by several prison officers, resulting in his admission to hospital with a broken leg, cuts, bruises and lacerations all over his body.
