Chad has sentenced 19 Arab herdsmen to death by firing squad for their part in killing 21 villagers during an attack in the south of the country earlier in the year.
Chad had come under intense criticism from human rights groups for executing nine people in November 2003, its first known judicial killings since 1991.
"The criminal court has condemned 19 people to death for involvement in the attack on the village of Maibogo," a magistrate in the capital N'Djamena told Reuters.
Tension between nomadic herdsmen and villagers competing for limited grazing space was not uncommon in the impoverished central African country.
During the trial the accused said they were carrying out a revenge attack for the killing of one of their fellow herdsmen. They were tried for murder, criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms and armed robbery.
A lawyer for the victims urged Chad not to execute the men.
