Charles Victor Thompson was again sentenced to death for the 1998 slayings of his ex-girlfriend and her new love interest.
Thompson, 35, received a new punishment hearing this week because the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that his constitutional right to counsel was violated when prosecutors in his 1999 trial played a recording of Thompson discussing a murder-for-hire plot. The appeals court upheld his capital murder conviction, however. Friday's verdict returns him to death row, where he was sent for killing Dennise Hayslip, 39, and Darren Keith Cain, 30. The murders took place April 30, 1998.
