Chechen rebels said that nine members of the Russian special-purpose police (OMON) from Perm were executed after the 72 hours provided to Russia for the exchange of prisoners had passed. Guerrillas suggested swapping the officers for Colonel Yury Budanov who had been arrested for the murder of a Chechen girl. The rebel leaders also offered to exchange the OMON troops' bodies for rebels captured by the Russians.
