Cheikh Kanoute, the founder of a Malian sect of followers known as the "Bare-footed", and two of his disciples, were sentenced to death by the Bamako criminal court. The court found the sect leader and his disciples, Abdou Doumbia and Abdoulaye Diakite, guilty of assassinating a judge in Dioila, 250 km from Bamako 2 August 1998.
