Chief Beirut Investigating Magistrate Hatem Madi requested the death penalty for the deputy leader of Esbat al-Ansar and six other members of the Islamic fundamentalist group, for their role in the 1996 murder of a Sidon man.
In the indictment, Madi accused Mahmoud Hussein Mustafa, the deputy of Abdel-Karim Sdi, also known as Abu Mohjen, of killing Ali Hamze Suheil with the help of Shadi Ahmad Sobha, Mustafa Nabil Sharqawi, Shehade Tawfiq Jawhar, Abdullah Hisham Shreidi and Tareq Shawqi Ghalban.
All are believed to be hiding at the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near Sidon, with the exception of Ghalban, who is currently in custody.
According to the indictment, Mustafa allegedly issued a fatwa ordering the death of Suheil, who aided the Lebanese Army in the handover a Palestinian murder suspect.
