Chief Justice Choi Jong-young expressed his regret at China's execution of a South Korean national convicted of drug trafficking and Beijing's failure to inform South Korea of the action.
Receiving Chinese Ambassador Li Bin at his office, Choi said: "Punishing drug criminals is the proper action, but I find it difficult to understand the measures the Chinese government took in view of the Vienna convention and the friendly relations between the two countries."
He added that he would like to discuss with the Chinese judiciary establishing a bilateral system requiring the two countries to give each other information concerning the legal procedures involved in trying citizens of each other's country. Ambassador Li said his government is looking into the situation in earnest.
