China backed away from putting an alleged Bible-smuggler on trial for his life, instead charging him with the lesser offence of illegal trading.
Li Guangqiang, a Hong Kong-based candle trader, faced a possible death sentence after he was charged with "using an evil cult to undermine the enforcement of law" in connection with the smuggling of more than 30,000 Bibles to a banned Christian sect. Illegal trading carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment.
