China denied it harvested organs from executed prisoners, including from some not quite dead, after a Chinese doctor testified to the U.S. congress that he had performed such operations.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue told a news conference Doctor Wang Guoqi had fabricated "a vicious slander" and "sensational lies" for his own personal good.Wang told the House of Representatives subcommittee on human rights that Chinese doctors harvested the organs to profit from foreign transplant patients. "Any clear-sighted person can see that this is a vicious slander against China by very peculiar individuals," Zhang said. "Some people will churn out sensational lies denigrating China to achieve their personal goals.""It is China's policy to strictly forbid any sales of human organs," she added. "The main sources of human organ transplants in China are the willing donations of citizens during their lifetime."
Michael Parmly, principal deputy assistant secretary of state, said the U.S. government voiced its concern over the accusations of organ harvesting in a diplomatic discussion on June 24 with Chinese officials.Some U.S. lawmakers want to ban training visits to the United States by Chinese doctors in a bid to deter organ harvesting, arguing that doctors could use these trips to recruit potential transplant patients to come to China.
