China gave a death sentence with a two-year reprieve to a former vice minister of public security for taking bribes and forcing lower ranking officials to break the law, state media said.
Among his crimes, Li Jizhou accepted bribes amounting to US$624,300 in different currencies while in office from the Yuan Hua group based in the southern coastal city of Xiamen, the official Xinhua news agency said.
The Yuan Hua group - headed by alleged kingpin Lai Changxing who is seeking political asylum in Canada - is said to have smuggled $6 billion in luxury goods, cars, oil and raw materials into China during the 1990s, paying off government officials with money and women to look the other way.
Apart from the suspended death sentence, Li Jizhou was stripped of all his property and political rights.
Li ordered Chinese frontier authorities in the southern island of Hainan to permit the illegal import of diesel oil from foreign ships, Xinhua said. He also forced officials in the southern province of Guangdong to allow the illegal trafficking of seized vehicles and goods, it said.
Li's wife Cheng Xinlian was given a 30-month prison sentence for her involvement in accepting bribes.
