CHINA: MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING BABY

Tang Shuhong, a 21 year old Shandong Province native, was sentenced to death for kidnapping and killing a 14-month-old baby, the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court in China ruled. Tang planned to kidnap the daughter of his former colleague surnamed Liu because he needed money to return home for the Spring Festival. On February 2, 2008, Tang went to Liu's home when only his mother-in-law and daughter were home. Tang demanded money from the woman, but she refused. He then kidnapped the baby, the court said. When the baby cried loudly, Tang became frightened of being caught, so he strangled the baby and threw her body into a river, the court said. Tang also tried to extort 30,000 yuan (US$4,392) from Liu after killing his daughter. Tang was caught the next afternoon.
