It was alleged that Yang, 26, rented a room from Xu Zhiming in Gaohang Town in December 2004. Xu cut off Yang's electricity on February 8, Lunar New Year's Eve, because he hadn't paid his rent. He didn't turn it back on again until February 14. Out of revenge, the day after the electricity was restored, Yang sneaked into Xu's home and killed Xu, his parents, his wife and his son.
