CHINA. MAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MILK EXTORTION CASE

Qian Junbo was sentenced to death by the Xiangfan Intermediate Court in China’s Hubei province for poisoning milk products from the Inner Mongolian-based Mengniu Group in stores in Changsha and Wuhan cities early in 2004 and attempting to extort 200,000 yuan from the manufacturers.
He then attempted to extort the company. Qian spiked the milk with formaldehyde and industrial alcohol. Tainted milk was also found in Foshan city in Guangdong province, although it was not clear if anybody fell sick.
Qian was also convicted of a 1999 armed robbery. Police tracked him down in April 2004, and also arrested two of his accomplices who were convicted and sentenced to three years in prison.
