Zheng reportedly owed about 10,000 yuan (US$1,235) to his company for using its hotline service. In order to get the money, he decided to rob the Cheng family, who used to employ his mother as a domestic helper. He entered the house, killed the new domestic helper with a hammer and tied up Cheng's son. After getting 10,000 yuan in cash, property certificates and several bank cards, Zheng switched the gas on in an attempt to kill the boy prior to leaving the premises.
