China said that it hoped visiting UN human rights experts would have a "comprehensive and objective" view of its judicial system and treatment of crime suspects by police. Confirming the visit of a five-member UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to China, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said they would meet senior Chinese police, prosecutors and court officials.
The delegation headed by Algerian lawyer Leila Zerrougui was to meet detainees, former detainees and family members as well as lawyers and non-governmental organisations during their 11-day visit to China.
Western governments and human rights groups had accused China of abuse and human rights violations of detainees and also illegal detention and trials, executions and torture .
