Republican US Senator Sam Brownback threatened to seek sanctions against China if it did not stop turning back refugees from North Korea who faced persecution and possible execution at home.
"It is a horrific situation," the Kansas lawmaker told a briefing organized by the humanitarian group Refugees International and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) think tank. "Thousands are fleeing persecution and starvation only to be rounded up by the Chinese in contravention of international law and then sent back to North Korea to persecution and probable death," he said.
