China's banned Falun Gong movement accused the communist authorities of rounding up 5000 of its followers in a police sweep in northeast China in which it claimed up to 100 members were killed.
The crackdown centred on the city of Changchun, capital of northeastern Jilin province, and came three weeks after Chinese President Jiang Zemin was accused by the group of ordering police to shoot members in the area.A Falun Gong statement said sources within China had said "dozens or even as many as 100 or more might be dead already as a result of police brutality".
Falun Gong claimed on March 7 that Mr Jiang had issued shoot-to-kill orders after a group of its members tapped into the signal of several television stations and broadcast footage attacking the Government's campaign against the group.
Two members accused by the authorities of involvement in the TV tapping were condemned to death, the group said.
