Chinese police arrested a group of North Korean defectors in Yunnan Province, near the country's border with Laos and Myanmar, between 24 and the 26 May, activists in Seoul said. The six are apparently being taken to northern China for repatriation to North Korea.
The group includes a 30-month-old boy, Lee Song-yong, whose mother Park Sun-hi, managed to get to South Korea and is now a citizen. Another member, the activists say, is Lee Hong-gang, an underground Christian in the North, whose father and one of two brothers were executed for their beliefs.
He lived with his mother who remained a Christian throughout the entire North Korean regime. However, they were forced to flee the North in April 2000, when they received indications that their arrest and execution were imminent.
Lee's mother is now missing and he faces execution if repatriated. Chinese authorities have made no official comment on the allegations.
