Circuit Judge Loyd Little Junior has sentenced James Barber, 44, to death for the May 20, 2001 robbery and murder of 75-year-old Dorothy "Dottie" Epps. Jurors convicted Barber on December 18 (see) of capital murder and voted 11-1 for the death penalty. Barber confessed to killing Epps in a videotaped interview with an investigator, when he was arrested just 5 days after the killing. A few days later, unaware the interview was recorded, Barber tried to recant the confession. The jury viewed the taped confession.
