Citing improper comments made by Cook County prosecutors and a Kane County judge, the Illinois Supreme Court vacated the death sentences of 2 men convicted in separate cases. In separate opinions, the court ordered new sentencing hearings for Julius Kuntu, who was convicted in Cook County Circuit Court in 1997 of setting a fire that killed seven in a building, and for Tony Dameron, who was convicted in Kane County Circuit Court in 1998 of fatally beating his 3-month-old daughter, Rachel.
