Corey Williams, convicted of the robbery-murder of a pizza delivery man is mentally retarded and not be subject to the death penalty, Caddo District Judge Scott Crichton ruled today in ordering him taken off death row. Williams was sentenced to die for the 1998 murder of Jarvis Griffin, who was shot as he left a house after making a pizza delivery. Juries found that Williams shot Griffin and took $20 from his pocket, along with 2 pizzas. In 2002 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that executing the mentally retarded is unconstitutional and Williams' lawyers appealed on those grounds. Four experts evaluated Williams and testified about his low IQ. Caddo prosecutors said they probably will not appeal.
