Courts in Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam received 17,986 cases in the first six months of 2002, of which 56.96% or 10,244 went to trial, and 11 defendants were sentenced to death, the city People's Court reported. No comparative figure for the same period of 2001 was given.
Some 4,212 were criminal cases, of which 201 involved 412 defendants charged on counts of murder or robbery. Six defendants were executed and 11 received terms of life imprisonment. The city now has 60 defendants awaiting the death sentence.
