Crusade Against Violence president Carina Agarao lashed at the Catholic Church for opposing President Arroyo's decision to forge ahead with the executions of convicts.
"I hope they would just let the law take its course," Agarao said in press briefing. "When there was no death penalty yet, we, victims of heinous crimes, suffered in silence. But then Congress passed the death penalty law, and it was one of the longest deliberated bill, so it should be implemented."
Agarao's lawyer-husband, Clarence, was gunned down in 1995.
Agarao viewed the CBCP statement as a sign the Catholic Church is pressuring the President to change her mind on the death penalty, an "implied threat" of possible withdrawal of support. "The Catholic Church is coercing the President to violate the law. It's so un-Catholic."
