Malacanang should not commute the death sentences of those hardened criminals whose convictions have already been affirmed by the Supreme Court, an administration senator said.
Senator Renato Cayetano made the call following reports that President Arroyo may commute to life imprisonment the punishment of convicted rapist Alfredo Nardo who is due for execution by lethal injection on Oct. 16.
"The punishment by death is a known deterrent to the commission on heinous crimes such as rape, kidnap for ransom, robbery with homicide and drug trafficking, among others," he said.
