Cyprus abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes in 1983. The last execution was conducted in 1962, and carried out by hanging. The Constitution presently in force allows for the death penalty in Art. 7 for three offenses: premeditated murder, high treason and skyjacking, while military criminal law inflicts it for offenses committed during wartime. Nevertheless, Law 96 of 1983 has modified the Penal Code where, making reference to the Constitution, it imposed the death penalty for premeditated murder. This crime is now punishable by life imprisonment.
