Darel Keith Rich, a 45 year old of native American origin, who was known by the name of Young Elk in prison, was executed by lethal injection in San Quentin State Prison. He was pronounced dead at 00:13. He was accused of being a serial killer who had murdered three white women, and a white girl of 11 years in the Summer of 1978. He was the first and only convict to be executed in the State of California in the year 2000. He was the 23nd to be executed in the U.S. during the year and No 620 since the death penalty was re-introduced in 1976.
