David Anthony Chell, was found guilty at the Malaysian High Court of smuggling 665 grams of heroin into the Asian country and subsequently sentenced to death by hanging. Carrying just 15 grams of the drug carries the death penalty in Malaysia. Lawyers representing the psychiatric nurse appealed against the decision, claiming he was framed and the subject of a "scandalous" police investigation. Father-of-two Chell was arrested at Penang's Bayan Lepas Airport on October 7, 1998, with the heroin stashed in 133 condoms in his trousers. The Foreign Office said it would intervene on behalf of a British nurse found guilty of drug smuggling in Malaysia if his appeal against a death sentence failed. An issued statement said: "We oppose the death penalty, and, if at the end of the legal process the sentence is upheld we will press for the Malaysian authorities to commute the sentence."
