Deposed the government of Mahendra Chaudhry said he was surprised by Speight's guilty plea, and the speed with which his sentence was commuted from death to life imprisonment.
But he said President Josefa Iloilo was right to spare Speight's life.
"I don't believe that, whatever the crime, anyone has the right to take another person's life, so we as a party are happy that the sentence has been commuted," he said.
