Writer Anatoly Pristavkin, adviser the Russian president Vladimir Putin on pardons, hopes that Russia "will soon bow out of the shameful list" of countries that have execution in force.
"The State Duma already enlists support for ratifying the Council of Europe's Protocol 6, where we assume an obligation not to execute. Possibly, lawmakers will finalize their decision to this effect in spring," said Pristavkin in an interview with Izvestia.
Concerning the president's position on this issue, the adviser said "The president told me that he was against execution, as always." Pristavkin said he would like to set up a council of experts to be joined by former members of the presidential pardon commission.
