Vinson received a lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt and was pronounced dead at 9:15 p-m.
Governor Tim Kaine -- a Roman Catholic -- is morally opposed to the death penalty, but promised during his campaign last year to uphold death sentences. Vinson's case was the 1st test of that pledge. Vinson was convicted in 1998 of the May 1997 rape and murder of 25-year-old Angela Felton.
Vinson becomes the 1st condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Virginia and the 16th the USA and th 1020th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
