Donald John Scanlon was resentenced to life in prison without parole for the apparent 1996 asphyxiation slaying of Claudine Wilson Harris. Scanlon was convicted of 1st-degree murder and given the death penalty in 1998 after jurors concluded that he suffocated Harris, 64, in her home. The judge set aside Scanlon's death penalty on February 25 (see), ruling that he should be resentenced. Stephens said he based his decision largely on what he said was the poor performance of Scanlon's trial lawyers.
