During a ministerial conference on human rights held by the Council of Europe at the Italian Foreign Ministry, it was said that following the signing of the European Convention on Human Rights, the main priorities lay in obtaining the aboltion of the death penalty in the whole of Europe. The Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini declared that Europe should become a place free of the death penalty. The Minister of Justice Piero Fassino declared that the abolition of the death penalty in all European States is an "urgent and incessant priority".
