On November 24, following the European Union's decision not to put the resolution presented at the UN General Assembly to the vote, the Italian Senate unanimously approved a motion, first signatory Ersilia Salvato, engaging the Government to take action within the European Union so that the objective of a global moratorium on executions might be pursued with flexibility, while respecting the principles of the UN Charter regarding national sovereignty and also the promotion of human rights as cogent values shared by the international community. Speaking on behalf of the Government, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Rino Serri confirmed Italy's commitment against the death penalty and for the moratorium on executions, in all international bilateral and multilateral seats.
