During the extraordinary session the European Parliament passed Resolution No. B5-0484,0486, 0497,0504,0512 and 0527/2001 on the death penalty in the world. This resolution among other things proposed that a European Day against the Death Penalty be introduced and committed the Belgian Presidency to introducing, and bringing to a vote a resolution on the abolition of the death penalty at the UN General Assembly in 2001, and to taking all steps necessary to obtain its adoption.
