Mohamad Deraman, a 31 year old lorry driver, was sentenced to death by the High Court for murdering businessman Ismail Sulaiman in Chini, Pekan, in 1999. In passing sentence Judge Tengku Datuk Baharudin Shah said it was proven beyond reasonable doubt that Mohamad had the intention to murder Ismail so that he could kidnap his two daughters. However, he acquitted another lorry driver Mohd Rosly Ismail, 24, who had been jointly accused.
