Egypt’s Upper Criminal Court sentenced Mohamed Moti Mohamed to death after finding him guilty of setting fire to a shop in the Musherib area of Doha in August 2004, resulting in one death.
"He should be hanged till death," the head of the three-member panel of judges, Abdul Atti Assad, said while delivering the verdict.
Also present were the Chinese couple who owned the shop. The chief judge consulted the owners before delivering the verdict and asked them if they would settle for blood money. They replied in the negative.
The man who died in the inferno, Lei Peng, 21, was not related to the shop owners. He had come to Doha looking for employment two weeks before the accident.
The court was told how the convict set fire to the shop intending to target the owners in revenge for a past disagreement.
