Eight foreign aid workers arrested and detained in Afghanistan for allegedly preaching Christianity were moved to a safer location ahead of an expected U.S. assault, an Australian Foreign Ministry official said.
Afghanistan's ruling Islamic Taliban regime contacted Australia's consul in Pakistan to advise that the aid workers - two Australians, two Americans and four Germans - had been moved to the new location.
No details of the new location were given. Their lawyer, Atif Ali Khan, and his assistant had been given visas by the Afghan Taliban embassy in Islamabad and were trying to travel by road because all air travel to Afghanistan had been suspended.
The foreign aid workers, along with 16 Afghani colleagues, could face the death penalty if convicted of attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity.
