Ershad Shikder was hanged till death in Khulna jail, Bangladesh, at one minute past midnight between May 10 and 11. He had been sentenced to death in seven murder cases.
The Supreme Court had confirmed his conviction for the killing of Jubo Dal leader Khalid Hossain in May 1999 and his mercy petition was rejected.
Once a day-labourer, Ershad Shikder joined the Jatiya Party and successive ruling parties, and was twice elected ward commissioner of Khulna City.
Following his arrest in 1999, his accomplices revealed stories of the gruesome murders of 23 people by Ershad following torture.
A number of political leaders and senior police officials were reportedly involved in his criminal activities
