the European Union was disappointed with Indonesia for having applied a capital sentence against Mrs Astini, convicted of premeditated murder and mutilation. The statement of disappointment was made by the Netherlands Ambassador to Indonesia in his capacity as European Union Chairman.
"Again the fundamental stance to oppose the application of the death sentence is due to the fact that the European Union has discussed this matter with Indonesia on many occasions. The EU Chairman hereby expressed his disappointment over the execution," he said. It was also said that the EU had insisted the government of Indonesia to postpone the execution of other convicts on death row and to apply again a moratorium on executions.
